Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the Islas Baleares (Balearic Islands). The city of Palma is located in the southern coast of the Island of Mallorca. It has always been a residential city although it has some industry (decorative glass, craftsmanship, pottery, spinning, furniture, chocolate, beer, processed cold meat and above all footwear). The great richness of Palma de Mallorca comes from tourism, with a great increase in transport systems and the development of the hotel industry. Its port not only develops an important commercial activity with the rest of the island but also has excellent facilities and communication for passengers to the nearby ports of Barcelona, Valencia and Alicante. The city was founded by Quinto Cecilio Metelo, conqueror for Rome of the Baleares in 123 B.C. Palma was later on invaded by Vandals, Byzantines and Arabs until it was reconquered by Jaime I of Aragón the 31st of December 1229.
