Logroño, the capital of the Region of La Rioja since 1.982, due to its geographical situation, is considered the "market city". In fact, from its foundation, the city of Logroño has been the scenery of a great number of fights to conquer it, due to its great strategic situation for the defense of the natural barrier of the Ebro River. It is a city of agricultural market that has overtaken a slow process of industrialization based on the products of the land. It is specially remarkable for its wine industry and the one of pickled vegetables.
La Rioja is worlwide known for its wines. Its name derives from the German name "Gronno" (a passing place), because Logroño is a compulsory stopping place in the pilgrimage road to Santiago. It obtained its municipal charter in 1.095 from Alfonso VI and the town charter years later, in 1.431. Moreover, Logroño counts with a great variety of services and possibilities for leisure and spare time.
The visit to the center and the Old Town (Casco Antiguo) of Logroño are a must for tourists. It is in this area where the day-to-day life of the city takes place. It was from the Old Town that the actual city emerged. We must point out the Ebro River crossing of the city, the Ebro Park and the image of the bridges that mark the limits of the city, as well as the image of the towers of the Cathedral Santa María de La Redonda, one of the best acknowledged images of the city, the church Santiago el Real, or the characteristic "steeple" of the Palace. Logroño is a city of contrats between tradition and modernity. A good proof of that are buildings so different as the Albergue de los Peregrinos (Pilgrims shelter), Museum of La Rioja, la Puerta del Revellín (a gateway), and the Palacio de los Chapiteles (the Palace of the spires), all of them in the city center.
Also the Paseo del Espolón (a promenade), the real heart of the city, the Glorieta del Doctor Zubía, and the City Hall (Ayuntamiento) are a good example of the urban reality of this city.
It is also necessary to mention the festivity of San Mateo, which takes place between the 20th and the 26th of september, meaning the beginning of the vintage in the region, and having a great significance in the Region.
Haro, only 43 kilometers from Logroño, is an important tourist center. It is the site for the Wine Museum, a product that reflects the most important economic basis of the area. Furthermore, it has many wine cellars, such as Viña Berceo, CUNE, Bodegas Bilbaínas or Viña Ardanza. In its surroundings, we can enjoy the landscape of Vista Alegre or Fuente del Moro, apart from the cliffs of Bilibio, where the Hermitage of San Felices is located, and the Basilique of La Vega and the Temple of Santo Tomás.
Calahorra is an important city of La Rioja placed on a river hill of the Cidacos River. The religious architecture is exceptional, especially the Cathedral with a Baroque doorway and beautiful chapels, chore and vestry. Also, the temples of Santiago, San Francisco and San Andrés are remarkable, the sanctuary of El Carmen and the Episcopal Palace. In addition, there are two museums in Calahorra: the City Museum and the Diocesan and Cathedral Museum. Outside, there are various excavations that compile treasures from the Paleolitic to the Roman setting, worth taking into account.
Santo Domingo de La Calzada, city named after its founder, it is one of the prototypic cities of the pilgrimage road to Santiago as well as the head of the region of the Upper Rioja. Its cathedral, with a Romanesque-Gothic style, was built during the XIIIth century. However, it is not the only religious construction in the city. The convents of San Francisco and the ones of the Bernardas Reales are also remarkable. After a visit to the Museum of the cathedral, we can follow the route by the old town and admire its façades with the different coats of arms sculpted, the City Hall (Ayuntamiento) and the rests of the town walls.
Ezcaray, capital of the River Valley Oja, was resettled by Basque inmigrants during the IXth and Xth centuries. It also counts with a Parish Museum. Its treasures are numerous. Within the limits of the city, there is a national game reserve and it has become well known by the ski station of Valdezcaray. Mountaineers find in this area some hills over 2000 metres, although the town is trying to prevail trekking and BTT. The promenade under the porticoes of the houses in the main square (plaza) is also remarkable, its façades have different coats of arms sculpted. The visit to the textile mills, the Temple de la Asunción and the Hermitage de Allende are also a must.
